A Preacher’s Misconception
Part 23

Topic: Living to please God

Sub-Topic: Conviction

Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, The power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.

John 16:8
“When he [the Holy Spirit] comes, he will convict the world, and show where right and wrong and judgment lie. He will convict them of wrong”

Today we will talk about “Conviction”. As Christians and the children of God, we have conviction. Conviction is an acknowledgment of right and wrong, a gut feeling in your spirit that tells you something is wrong and you need to get out of the situation or stop doing what you are doing. In this verse, it tells us that the holy spirit will convict us. The holy spirit is what true saints receive to help us live godly lives. You cannot be saved and not have any conviction, I will say it again, you CANNOT be saved if you do NOT have CONVICTION. Which means having the holy spirit. You can tell whether someone has the holy spirit by their conviction. I know I can tell when someone is saved when they are not. Tonight I will give you 3 pointers into an understanding of how you can tell whether if someone is saved or not under conviction. But first, let us get a definition of conviction to find out what it really means.

Conviction- To experience the frightful knowledge of failing to not be lined up by the word of God

Ex. Cursing. we all know that this is wrong and to be convicted of this, is to come to the knowledge that gods word is against this thus causing you to get out of sin. Yes we may fall and yes we will fall but there is a difference between someone who cares by watching what they say rather than someone that says. i.e. No one’s perfect and etc. Be careful what you let come out of your mouth. One thing to remember to live by, always ask you this question, is my actions regarding the word of God justified? or this one, Am I lined up with the word of God? If I am, then I have nothing to worry about. Also, remember you can’t live your life how you want to live because it’s not your life. Take a look below at my three-pointers.

My three-pointers

#1 Repentance from a sincere heart, when we are really repentant then we will know that someone will have a change of mind and heart. You cannot have any conviction without repentance. An ex. is taking back what you say. I do this all the time and being more observant and aware of your words before they come out their mouths.

#2 The holy spirit, To understand this then refer back to tonight’s scripture, John 16:8. This scripture explains that you cannot have conviction without the holy spirit.

#3 To be God fearing, You cannot fear God if you don’t see fault in your action according to the word of God.

Before I end tonight’s posts I want to wrap it up by explaining that conviction is not a fear that something bad will happen to you or that you will receive punishment. Understand that conviction is the will to be wanting to be lined up in the word of God. Let me also point this out that conviction is different from feeling guilty even sinners feel guilt. The difference is that we feel the sheer disgust of sin and the only way we will feel that way is when we experience and seen God’s beauty, his purity, and holiness to know that sin DOES NOT DWELL WITHIN HIM and therefore should not dwell within us. Be safe and be blessed, everyone.
